Mar Vista –LA’s Storybook Neighborhood

Mar Vista is what you picture when you think of the perfect neighborhood: tree-lined streets, swing sets and sidewalks meant for strollers, scooters, and long evening dog walks. The homes — many mid-century gems — feel straight out of a storybook, equal parts charm and character.

Here, neighbors actually know each other. Sundays revolve around the farmers’ market, evenings spill out of casual restaurants and cozy bars, and kids still ride bikes until the streetlights come on. It’s very family-friendly, design-forward, and one of the Westside’s best-kept secrets.

Where in the LA is Mar Vista?

Mar Vista sits just inland from Venice and Marina del Rey, bordered by Santa Monica to the north and Culver City to the east. It’s a short drive (or bike ride) to the beach but feels a world away — calmer, quieter, and more residential.

HISTORY 10’1

Once farmland in the early 1900s, Mar Vista grew into a postwar hub of mid-century homes — many designed by iconic architects like Gregory Ain. In 1948, Ain designed a 52-home tract, now celebrated as one of LA’s more significant experiments in livable modernism.

Shopping & Food Recommendations

Beethoven Market

All-new and already putting Mar Vista on the culinary map, thanks to epic food, craft cocktails, unpretentious design and a patio made for hanging with friends.

Blueys

Aussie-style café vibes with strong coffee, healthy eats, and a sunny patio for locals and visitors alike.

Mar Vista Farmers Market

The Sunday ritual. Fresh produce, live music, and neighbors catching up over green juice and pupusas. Gets a little packed but worth it.

El Chucho

Casual neighborhood bar with natural wines, Mexican bites, a pool table and regular vinyl DJ nights. Outdoor seating for warm nights.

Rediscover Center

A creative hub where kids (and adults) make magic out of recycled materials. Part art class, part community gathering.

Pitfire Pizza

Very family-friendly (lots of after-school dining), wood-fired, and consistently delicious. A weeknight community staple.

Little Fatty

Taiwanese comfort food at its best — dumplings, noodles, and flavor-packed small plates — with a hidden cocktail bar next door.

Accomplice

This is the hidden cocktail bar next door. Serious, craft cocktails and (hint) you can order food from the restaurant next door, Little Fatty, and eat it at the bar.

Pepe’s Thrifty Shop

A family owned (for over 30 years) vintage furniture store — no frills, lots of mid-century and eclectic pieces.
